Frequently asked questions
General — PBR Textures & Materials
What is a PBR material?+
A PBR (Physically Based Rendering) material is a collection of texture maps (Normal, Albedo, Depth, Ambient Occlusion, and Roughness) that simulate how real-world materials interact with light. PBR workflows help create more realistic and consistent 3D renders across different rendering engines.
What is a PBR texture map?+
A Physically Based Rendering texture map is an image used to define a specific physical property of a material in a 3D scene. Multiple PBR texture maps work together to simulate how real-world surfaces interact with light, creating realistic materials for games, architectural visualization, product rendering, and visual effects.
What is a Normal map?+
A Normal map is a PBR texture map that simulates small surface details without adding extra geometry to a 3D model. It changes how light interacts with the surface to create the appearance of bumps, grooves, scratches, and other fine details while keeping the model lightweight. Normal maps are widely used in games, product visualization, and architectural rendering.
What is a Roughness map?+
A Roughness map is a PBR texture map that controls how smooth or rough a material appears by determining how light is reflected from its surface. Low roughness values produce shiny, reflective materials, while high roughness values create matte, diffuse surfaces. Roughness maps are essential for creating realistic materials such as metal, wood, stone, plastic, and fabric.
What is an Albedo map?+
An Albedo map, also called a Base Color map, is a PBR texture map that defines the natural color of a material without lighting, shadows, or reflections. It provides the foundation for a material's appearance and works together with other PBR texture maps to produce realistic rendering results.
What is Ambient Occlusion?+
An Ambient Occlusion map is a PBR texture map that simulates soft shadows in areas where light is naturally blocked, such as corners, creases, and small gaps. It enhances depth perception and surface detail, making 3D materials appear more realistic without increasing rendering complexity.
What is a Depth map?+
A Depth map, also called a Height map, is a PBR texture map that stores height information for a material's surface. It is used to create the appearance of depth, displacement, or relief by representing higher and lower areas of a texture in grayscale. Depth maps help add realistic surface variation to materials such as bricks, stone, wood, and terrain.
What is a Metalness map?+
It tells the renderer which parts of a surface are metal and which are not. Black is non-metal and white is metal.
What is an Emission map?+
It defines which parts of a material glow on their own, such as lava, lamps, screens, or neon.
What is an Alpha (opacity) map?+
It defines which parts of a texture are visible and which are transparent. It's used for leaves, fences, hair, and cutout sprites.
Technical — Texturity PBR
Who is Texturity PBR for?+
Anyone who needs realistic surface materials without hunting for them or building them by hand. Texturity PBR turns an ordinary photo into a seamless, ready-to-use PBR material, so it is useful for:
- 3D artists and generalists working in Blender, Cinema 4D, Maya, or similar tools who need custom materials fast.
- Game developers and indie studios using Unity or Unreal Engine who need tileable textures for environments, props, and prototypes.
- Environment, prop, and technical artists who photograph real surfaces with a phone or camera and turn them into game-ready materials.
- Architects, interior designers, and visualization artists creating realistic floors, walls, facades, and finishes in SketchUp, Live Home 3D, and other design tools.
- Live Home 3D users who want custom materials, plus panels, doors, windows, and camera-facing sprites for trees, plants, and people.
- Product, packaging, and industrial designers previewing how a finish, fabric, wood, or metal will look in 3D.
- Motion designers, VFX artists, and filmmakers who need believable surfaces for backgrounds, set extensions, and previs.
- AR/VR creators building USDZ and glTF assets for Apple Vision Pro, iPhone, and the web.
- Hobbyists, modders, and tabletop creators who texture 3D-printed models, game mods, maps, and terrain.
- Photographers and graphic designers who want to turn their own photo libraries into seamless backgrounds and materials.
- Students, educators, and beginners learning PBR workflows, since one photo gives a complete set of maps with a live 3D preview.
Everything runs on your Mac and works offline, and it is a one-time purchase, so it fits solo creators and professional pipelines alike.
Does Texturity PBR work offline?+
Yes. All image processing and texture generation take place locally on your Mac. No cloud processing, subscriptions, or internet connection are required.
How do I create a seamless texture from a photo?+
Texturity PBR automatically repairs seams and blends image edges to transform ordinary photos into seamless, tileable textures suitable for games, 3D models, and architectural visualization.
Can I generate PBR materials from my own photos?+
Yes. Texturity PBR generates a complete set of PBR textures from your imported photos: Albedo, Normal, Depth, Ambient Occlusion, and Roughness, plus optional Alpha, Metalness, and Emission maps, for up to eight maps in all.
What export formats are supported?+
Texturity PBR exports generated texture maps in high-quality PNG, JPEG, or TIFF formats. It can also export a ready-made 3D file alongside the maps: USDZ, glTF, or a Live Home 3D document (LHZD).
Which 3D applications is Texturity PBR compatible with?+
Texturity PBR generates standard PBR texture maps that can be used with every application that supports Physically Based Rendering materials. Among such 3D software and game engines are Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D, Maya, SketchUp, and Live Home 3D. For Live Home 3D you can also export a ready-made object directly: a panel, door, window, or a camera-facing sprite that is ideal for trees, plants, and people.
Can I generate PBR textures from stock photos?+
Yes, Texturity PBR has direct integration with Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels image stocks, allowing you to search for and upload right into the program textures you like.
Does Texturity PBR support 4K textures?+
Texturity PBR generates PBR texture maps at a resolution of 1024 × 1024 pixels. If you need higher-resolution textures, use the Upscale feature in the Export tab to increase the resolution up to 4096 × 4096 pixels.
Can I preview materials before exporting?+
Yes. Texturity PBR lets you preview generated PBR materials in real time using the 3D PBR tab. Materials can be applied to a sphere, rounded cube, or flat plane to evaluate how they look on different surface types.
You can customize the preview by adjusting the environment lighting, direct light, texture scale, Normal map strength, Roughness strength, Metalness, and Ambient Occlusion to see how the material responds under different conditions.
Can Texturity PBR cut out trees, people, or hair?+
Yes. The Alpha tab cuts out complex subjects such as foliage, people, and fine hair, with detailed masks. You can refine the edges with brushes and selection tools. It also runs offline.
Can I use Texturity PBR with Live Home 3D?+
Yes. Export an LHZD file with Panel, Door, Window, or Sprite objects. A sprite always faces the camera, so it works well for trees, plants, and people.
How do I remove baked-in light and shadows from a photo?+
Albedo De-Light has three passes: AI, Procedural, and Directional. Each has an Amount slider and they can be combined.
Can I add or fix surface detail in the normal map?+
Yes. Use Procedural Relief or Photometric Relief, or select an area and use a Relief Layer or Flatten Layer.
Can I create metal or glowing materials?+
Yes. The optional Metalness and Emission tabs let you paint and layer those maps, and they show in the 3D preview and in exports.
What are the Water, Snow, Moss, and Lava effects?+
They are one-click effects that change every map at once, using the Depth map to decide where they settle. You can combine them.
Does the app have layers and masks?+
Yes. Every map tab has a stack of layers and effects with masks and blend modes. You can place stock photos or your own images as layers.
Can I paint with a texture or pattern?+
Yes. Use the Stencil brush with a built-in or custom stencil.
Can I process many textures at once?+
Yes. Batch Export runs a whole folder with a saved preset.
