This is the first in the series of Art Text 3 - How To guides. 11 steps will cover the entire process from scratch of creating 3D title. We will explain how gradient work, talk about light scene, and different 3D object parameters.
1. We will begin by adding a background.
Art Text 3 comes with a collection of ready-made backrounds suitable for various tasks and tastes. For this, go to Content panel, select Backgrounds under Images tab. Click on the orange with gradient image to set it up as the backgroung for our graphics.
2. Supplied backgrounds can be easily edited. Fill tab of the Inspector will let us change Gradient from Linear to Oval for spherical effect. Adjusting gradient to make colors more contrasting is simple, click on each of the three dots on the gradient slider to bring up Colors panel and change the color to your liking.
3. Now we can turn to working with the text.
First, let’s change the default text to “CINEMA” via the Text tab in the Inspector, and make sure to type it in uppercase.
4. Using corner handles adjust text size to fit the screen and position it in the middle. Aligning guides will help to precisely locate the center.
5. Through the Text tab of the Inspector we can change the Font by clicking Font button.
Art Text 3 uses fonts available in your system collection. If that’s not enough, you can buy Extras pack for Art Text 3 to add 100 professionally designed fonts. Alternatively, Art Text 3 offers access to Google Fonts, this integration is available in the website version only. In our design we will use Stone Soup font from Extras pack collection.
Also, we will spread the letters slightly further apart by setting a positive value for Kerning option.
6. To convert text or shape from flat to 3D use Convert to 3D option either from the Context menu (Control + mouse click on the text), or from Layers menu.
Since we no longer will access to Content Panel, use Hide option for Content Panel under View menu. This will dedicate more canvas area to prevoew and work with the design.
7. Once we have a 3D text, we can begin applying different effects to it. Let’s apply a texture to the text using the Material tab of the Inspector. For this, click color square, then in the pop-up window click on the Solid Color box to pick a color, we will use yellow.
8. You will notice that yellow that has been selected, doesn’t really look as yellow on the design. Well, that’s because texture on a 3D object may appear looking differently depending on how the light illuminates it. Art Text 3 offers four Light Sources, turn On/Off, and choose the light color for each light spot.
You can drag the circles on the sphere to relocate the respective light sources. Position four spots close to how they are placed on the picture. Light spot that is Off is represented with white dot.
Pick Ambient, Diffuse and Specular colors to adjust the look of shadowed and lit parts of the object.
9. We can now move on to Geometry tab of the Inspector to set 3D object shape. Geometry tab will let us customize 3D object depth and thickness, select Chamfer type and its size. We will use semi-circle chamfer.
With the help of Transformation shapes users can warp and bend text in any possible way. Some Transformation shapes will assist in positioning the object. We will use “Shear” shape to adjust 3D depth and position letters using two sliders.
10. Finally, we can change the 3D object depth color. This can be achieved by setting up and applying Depth Gradient under Effects tab of the Inspector. Depth gradient colors as we learned before are controlled by color dots and their distribution along the gradient line, add multiple dots to have several color changes.
We will use three dots and set the Opacity for the top one to 0%, this way front of the object will not be affected by the Depth Gradient. Try to move two dots at the top closer to each other.
11. The final touch will be to apply and set up shadow via the Effects tab of the Inspector to give the text more natural 3D look. Now the graphics is ready to be exported to an image file PDF, PNG, TIFF, EPS and used virtually anywhere we want.
