Apple's Address Book shows phone number as (123)456-7890
I want to format as 123-456-7890
BCC ports it in as 1234567890

If I edit to 123-456-7890 and later click the category of any other text field, the phone field reverts to 1234567890. What up with that?

For now, I will just paste in some text from TextEdit to take place of the phone field. And hope there is some better solution suggested here.

Hi,
The telephone number appears in Business Card Composer as it was typed into the Address Book form. The Address Book shows in contacts re-formatted phone number (according to its preferences). Business Card Composer imports telephone numbers in their original format.

To get a phone number exported from the Address Book as 123-456-7890, you should open the contact, remove the number and enter it again.

Great response! That would explain the phone number format.

But if I edit the phone number in the BCC text field (eg add the dashes), I would like my edit to remain until I edit it again. Altering or even selecting the category of any other selected text field causes the phone field (and other edited fields) to revert to data as formated in Address Book. Strangely, the undo command does not cause this reverted text to change back. Any advice on making effective undos in this situation?

Current project is a one-off business card. Links to data in Address Book are more of a nuisance than a feature, especially for text unrelated to the database.

Unless you have better workaround, I will just assign everything the Custom category. (or maybe I can get a "None" option as explored in another forum topic)

Hi,
I think, it is possible to change the way BCC works with edited fields in the future.
For now, it seems impossible to get the edited data back by undoing.

If you don't like that fields are linked to the data in Address Book, turn them to "Custom".

I'm on it. I hope some product updates add better undo functionality.

Topic closed, as far as I am concerned.
Thanks, Nick

I'm having the same problem with the phone number format. When I change Person on the card I may get the phone number with no spaces/dashes (1234567890) or I may get it in the format that my Address Book displays (123-456-7890). There does not seem to be any consistency and no way to add the dashes to the ones that appear w/o it (except for changing to manual Custom fields)

Using V4.3(407)

thanks for the help!

Hi dkg,

You can export a contact to a vCard file. Than change formatting of the phone number.
vCard with changed data can be imported back to the Address Book (double click the file in the Finder).

Here is the content of a sample vCard below. The line with the telephone number begins with "TEL". To edit the file, open it with TextEdit. Don't use double-clicking for this, drop the file onto TextEdit icon or use File>Open.

Code: Select all

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Jones;Bill;;;
FN:Bill Jones
TEL;type=WORK;type=pref:12345678900
CATEGORIES:Me
X-ABUID:23E20754-CDFA-4B24-B2C5-08DFF54F55D7:ABPerson
END:VCARD
