The main application window is comprised of the following parts:

The size of the main window for new documents can be controlled by the Default Zoom option in the program Preferences.
On the left side of the toolbar is the button that shows or hides the Clipart panel.

Then follow Selection, Text Box, Rectangle
and Line buttons.
Depending on the selected mode the mouse pointer changes and different
operations can be performed.
The Selection tool is used most often. Using it you can select objects, move, resize, and assign new properties to them. To perform an operation on an object, the object must be selected first. The application switches to the Selection tool automatically after some other tool has been used.
The Text Box tool is used for creating text boxes in which text is placed. You can edit text in a text box by double-clicking on it with the mouse.
Use the Rectangle tool to draw rectangles. A rectangle shape can be also added from the Clipart panel.
The Line tool allows you to draw lines. To draw a strictly horizontal or vertical line, hold down the Shift key while drawing.
The appearance of the mouse pointer depends on the selected tool.
The buttons to the right of the tool switch let you perform the following operations:
The Print button opens the print
dialog.
The Zoom In and Zoom Out
increase or decrease the magnification respectively. The current zoom
level can be seen in the box at the bottom right corner of the main
window.
The Inspector button - opens the Inspector window where
you can control various parameters of objects.
The Show Colors button opens the system Colors
panel.
The Show Fonts button opens the system Font
panel.
To customize the toolbar, use the View > Customize Toolbar... menu item.

The Insert Art Text button opens the Art Text application and lets you create artsy looking text to insert into the document. The Art Text application should be installed on your computer.
You can customize the toolbar by using View > Customize Toolbar menu item.
The next line of buttons contains controls for working with text styles and pages.
The Text Styles drop-down menu displays the list of the text styles available for the document. To choose a style, click on its name in the list. The Edit... option at the bottom of the list opens the Edit Styles dialog where you can add, remove or modify the existing styles. You can read more about text styles in the Text Styles section.
The Add Page button opens a drop-down list with thumbnails of available pages. Click a page to add it into the document.
The Page Forward and Page Backward buttons take you to the next or previous page.
The Toggle Preview Mode button hides or shows the layout elements such as guides, borders around objects and margins. Use it if you want to see how your document will look when printed.
To activate the Pan (Scroll Hand) tool, press the Space key when no text is in editing mode. The mouse pointer will change to a "hand". Drag the sheet to scroll it.
The Clipart Panel is a built-in collection of Images and Smart Shapes. It also gives access to images in iPhoto and to graphic files on your computer.
The Inspector window is a set of tools and options to control objects (text and graphics) in the document.
