Split Level Support

Hi,

I'm using Live Interior 3D Pro to model my home in preparation for some remodeling but I can't figure out how to reproduce the way my home is constructed.

The second level of my house is 45" above the first floor with a short staircase between them.  I don't see how to use any of the Building Property tools to create this effect.  I noticed a question similar to this in 2008 but that was two years ago so I'm assuming that I'm missing something.

I love the simplicity and design of this produce but, obviously, without this particular functionality this application is not nearly as useful for me as I had hoped.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide for this problem.

Chris

Re: Split Level Support

Hi Chris,

In the 2D view, there are tools for adding custom floors and ceilings. You should add a custom floor in the room that is in the higher level. Then set the elevation of the custom floor. In the low level room, add a custom ceiling and also adjust its elevation. The elevation parameter of a custom floor or ceiling can be found in the Inspector.

Here you will find some details:

Re: Split Level Support

Hi Nick,

First, thank you for your advice and I'm happy to say that I've managed to work through these issues so that I now would like some suggestions on how to refine my model if that's possible.

There are three issues I need help with:
1) I was able to create a split level model with your advice but only by first elevating the custom floor by 45" but, when I tried to create normal sized walls that began at this floor the program limited me to short walls that were equal in height to the walls of the lower floors.

To get around this I created custom walls that sit right on top of the short ones, and this is fine except that it places a brick-surfaced margin between the two sections of walls that is unsightly.

I hope this is clear and I'm wondering if there is either another way to create solid walls on the split level floor, or is there a way to change the surface of the brick so that it matches the color of the wall sections?

The second problem is that doors and windows that I place on the upper split level are only represented with a dotted line above the brick margin line.  Is there a way to correct this so that the whole door or window is represented?

Finally, I know that the manual says clearly that the auto ceilings and floors created automatically when you enclose a room cannot be deleted but, is there a way make them temporarily invisible so I can see the floor layout underneath?  Clicking on the eye symbol of the ceiling in the Project Tree doesn't do this. Am I missing something? What I'm doing now is leaving a gap in the otherwise enclosed walls of a given room to that the auto ceiling isn't created.

Thanks again for your help,
Chris

Re: Split Level Support

Hi Chris,

1) To have the trick with elevated custom floors work, you have to set the elevation of the ceiling equal to the ceiling of the higher floor. This way the ordinary walls will be useful for the floors of both levels. In a lower level room, you add a custom ceiling, and in a higher level room, you add a custom floor.

To get around this I created custom walls that sit right on top of the short ones, and this is fine except that it places a brick-surfaced margin between the two sections of walls that is unsightly.

The margin with the bricks material applied is a slab. Choose for it the same material as the walls have. Find an appropriate material in the library located in the Materials tab in the Inspector.

Or use the material picker on this tab. Select the bricks texture. Click on the picker tool to activate it. Then click with the tool on a wall to copy its material to the selected surface.

2)

The second problem is that doors and windows that I place on the upper split level are only represented with a dotted line above the brick margin line.  Is there a way to correct this so that the whole door or window is represented?

Windows and walls can be inserted in a wall of one storey. It's possible to elevate these objects so that one part is in one storey and the rest is in another, but in only one floor a wall or window will create an opening. There is no possibility work around this.

3) Making the floor and ceiling invisible doesn't work because there is a slab between them. It remains visible. There are other ways:
- use the eye icon for the whole upper floor – all its objects will disappear;
- in the upper storey, apply the glass material to the floor to make it transparent.
